A 24-Hour Adventure in Salida, Colorado
In June 2024, we made a quick 24-hour visit to the picturesque mountain town of Salida, Colorado. Surrounded by the majestic Rocky Mountains and the Arkansas River, Salida is known for its vibrant arts scene, historic downtown, and outdoor adventures. Though our time was short, we made the most of it by visiting some of the town's local gems.
Starting the Day at Tony's Waffles & Coffee
Our day began at Tony’s Waffles & Coffee, a cozy and popular spot with both locals and visitors. The name may highlight waffles, but their menu offers much more. I opted for their chicken enchiladas, which were packed with flavor and the perfect breakfast option for a savory start to the day. Alongside the enchiladas, I enjoyed a refreshing cold latte—ideal for beating the summer heat.
Nick, on the other hand, stuck to the waffle specialty. He ordered waffles topped with fresh strawberries, which came with a generous dollop of whipped cream on the side. Paired with the relaxed atmosphere and friendly service, Tony’s was a perfect start to our day in Salida.
Browsing Salida Books
After breakfast, we took a walk through Salida's charming downtown area, and our next stop was **Salida Books**. This independent bookstore was a treasure trove for any book lover, with a cozy and welcoming ambiance. The shelves were brimming with a diverse selection of genres, ranging from local authors to contemporary bestsellers and hidden literary gems.
I spent time browsing through their collection, particularly drawn to their section on Colorado-themed books, which showcased stories and history about the region. I picked up a novel by a local author as a souvenir. The staff at Salida Books were friendly and knowledgeable, offering recommendations and engaging in conversation about the local literary scene.
A Nostalgic Stop at "F" Street Five and Dime
Our last stop was at “F” Street Five and Dime, an old-fashioned general store that felt like a nostalgic trip back in time. This quaint shop was filled with retro toys, candies, and various knick-knacks. We wandered the aisles, admiring the vintage-style household items and picking up a few souvenirs to bring home.
The Five and Dime was a perfect mix of novelty and charm, offering a fun and relaxed way to wrap up our exploration of Salida.
A Short but Sweet Stay
Even though our visit to Salida lasted just 24 hours, it was packed with memorable experiences. From savoring delicious chicken enchiladas and cold lattes at Tony's Waffles & Coffee to exploring the cozy Salida Books and indulging in nostalgia at "F" Street Five and Dime, the town left a lasting impression. Whether you're passing through or planning a longer stay, Salida offers a unique blend of charm, history, and local culture that is hard to resist. We left feeling refreshed and eager to return for a longer adventure in this picturesque Colorado gem.
