Finding Quiet in Split, Croatia: My Slower Season Reflections
My time in Split, Croatia turned out to be a beautiful experience—but not in the energetic, sun-drenched way you often see on social media. Instead, it was meaningful in a slower, quieter, more grounded way. I arrived in November, just as the city was easing into its calm season. Tourists had drifted home, businesses were closing their doors for winter, and the once-busy streets of Old Town had softened into a peaceful stillness. At first, I didn’t know what to expect, but the change of pace became exactly what I didn’t realize I needed.
With fewer distractions, I found myself savoring simple routines. I wandered through Old Town without rushing, hearing my footsteps echo against centuries-old stone. I visited nature spots that felt almost private, wrapped in the crisp air of early winter. And while the stillness might feel lonely to some, I embraced it as a chance to breathe before heading into a busy season of family gatherings and holiday events waiting for me back home.
Because the digital nomad scene slows down dramatically this time of year, there weren’t any meetups or events happening. Instead of fighting the quiet, I leaned into it. My days became intentional and productive: I spent hours working on my businesses—editing videos, outlining new ideas, and creating fresh business plans. Without the usual buzz of travel life, I finally had mental space to focus deeply.
I also used this time to catch up on personal tasks. I started my Christmas shopping early, planned out my holiday schedule, and took care of the life admin that’s easy to ignore when you’re constantly on the move. To keep myself somewhat social, I rotated between two cozy cafés where I worked from my laptop. Even short conversations with baristas or fellow remote workers added a bit of warmth to the day. And whenever the stillness felt a little too quiet, I called friends and family—just enough to feel connected, without breaking the peaceful rhythm I had settled into.
What I learned most during this month is something that goes against the glossy version of digital nomad life we often see online. The lifestyle is often portrayed as beaches, cocktails, coworking communities, and stunning sunsets. And yes, sometimes it is those things. But other times, it’s just you in a warm Airbnb while the rain taps against the windows, working through your to-do list and letting yourself slow down. It’s peaceful, grounding, and surprisingly fulfilling.
Split in the off-season reminded me that not every travel chapter needs to be exciting to be meaningful. Sometimes the quieter seasons are the ones that reset you the most. And for me, this gentle pause in Croatia was exactly what I needed before stepping back into the world of family, holidays, and everything that comes with the end of the year.
