What I Did in Split, Croatia in November: A Quiet Month, Beautiful Adventures
November in Split is a very different experience from the lively summer version most travelers know. The sun-soaked beaches, bustling waterfront, and packed restaurants fade into a quieter, slower rhythm as the city shifts into low season. Temperatures drop, businesses close their doors for the winter, and the streets—usually buzzing with tourists—grow calm. While this meant there wasn’t a long list of activities to choose from, it gave me the chance to explore Split in a more peaceful, intimate way.
Even in its calmest moments, Split has a lot to offer if you’re willing to embrace simplicity. Here are the top three things I did during my chilly but charming November stay.
1. Hiking Through Marjan Park
One of the easiest and most rewarding things to do in Split, even in the off-season, is to visit Marjan Park. On a sunny day, I walked there from Old Town, enjoying how quiet the streets felt without the usual tourist crowds. The park itself is a breath of fresh air—pine trees, winding paths, and sweeping views over the city and the Adriatic Sea.
The climb isn’t difficult, and the higher you go, the more the scenery opens up. The combination of sunshine and cold air made the walk invigorating, and at the top, the panoramic view of Split truly looked like something out of a postcard. If you need a break from the city, Marjan Park is the perfect escape.
2. Exploring Klis Fortress
A short 40-minute bus ride from Old Town brought me to Klis Fortress, a historical gem I knew I couldn’t miss. Perched high above the valley, the fortress has a dramatic presence—and for just 12 euros, it’s well worth the visit.
I’ll be honest: the walking here can be intense. The steps are steep, the stones can be slippery, and you’ll want to watch your footing. But every step is rewarded. The views stretch across mountains, villages, and all the way out to the sea. And because it was November, I practically had the entire site to myself, which made the experience even more magical. No crowds, no noise—just history, wind, and breathtaking landscapes.
3. A Magical Night at the Croatian National Theater
One of my favorite surprises in Split was discovering how affordable cultural events are in the off-season. When I saw that the Croatian National Theater was offering tickets to The Snow Queen ballet, I couldn’t resist. The theater itself is stunning: elegant architecture, warm lighting, and that old-European charm you can’t replicate.
The performance was beautiful, and the ticket price was incredibly reasonable—much cheaper than what I’m used to in larger cities. It ended up being one of the coziest and most memorable evenings of my trip.
Final Thoughts
Even though November in Split is quiet and cold, it offers a different kind of beauty—one filled with peaceful walks, empty viewpoints, and unexpected cultural experiences. If you’re visiting in the off-season, embrace the stillness. Split has plenty to share, even when the city sleeps.
